Destination Unknown

The term honeymoon apparently originated because friends and family were supposed to supply the newlywed couple with enough mead to last their "sweetest period" - which was estimated to be about a month.

Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe it was the wine making them sweet, and that if the couple kept drinking, maybe they'd also keep up the good times? Could we impact the divorce rate by subscribing newlyweds to the wine of the month club?

It's not that I wouldn't mind being showered with wine by our kith and kin - lovely vintages selected by Sean's parents, "flavoured" wines found in the 'party' section with a sugar content higher than alcoholic content donated by my sisters, random bottles lovingly given to my non-wine-drinking mother as end of the school year gifts from students regifted and probably still with original wrapping (and gift tag!) attached, and of course the cheap boxes of whatever was on the aisle and grabbed hurriedly by my broke and disorganized friends (sound familiar, Kate?) - it's just that my work (if not my liver) would probably object to this stewed state lasting literally until the moon had done its cycle.

The post-wedding vacation that we're craving might turn out to be almost as long anyway. We want to "do" Europe, as they say, and to do it well, we're going to need more than just a few days. But we're also going to need sunnier skies and more clement weather than February usually provides. So we're postponing it until summer and sunshine, knowing full well that it will more crowded and more expensive and more aggravating. But more us.

However, never the types to pass up an excuse to vacation, we're planning a February honeymoon ANYWAY. The kind with sunburns and sand and salllllllllty margaritas.

And king size beds.

But where is this?

Not the Dominican Republic, this much we know.
(I was married there in another life)

Probably not Mexico, or the Bahamas either, since I travelled to both those countries in 2010 and though beautiful, I like to expose my passport to new and interesting stamps.

So where does that leave us?

Pitch us your honeymoon! Tell us where to go! Where have you been? What did you love? What do you hear good things about?

Pick our honeymoon, and we'll be sure to send a postcard.

The is no more romantic a honeymoon plan than to go to Bora Bora, the most beautiful of tropical isles.

What about a Pacific Island, like Rarotonga?

Do something different and take a look at the future in place like Uruguay and Ecuador.

I vote for Costa Rica. Well actually, Bali but I'm guessing that's a bit too far.

I was also thinking of a place a bit further, but it's incredible: The Maldives! Bali would also be nice, though :)

Jay said...

I would love Bali, no doubt, but we'll be lucky to get a week away.

Hawaii. Pure and simple, smells divine! And you have the choice of partying 24/7 on Oahu in Honalulu or going "quiet" on Maui but where there is still plenty of night life.

Maui is my favourite place on earth. :-)

Ours wasn't extravagant, but we still talk about all of it. DH wanted to go to Mexico and I didn't, so we compromised and went to San Diego and had a blast. But I don't think it would be warm enough for Feb.

If you're looking for a cheap(er) honeymoon to save up for Europe, I've heard the Florida Keys are way laid back and have a high alcohol content.

Fiji!

Self-promotion or what >_<

Great idea J! I can't wait to find out where we get to honeymoon. Also love how you nailed our families' potential wine choices!

No one has mentioned Sydney Australia the San Fran of the Southern Hemisphere only better, it is spring in Sydney at the moment but after another month it warnms up a fair bit. but there is heaps of inexpensive(cheap) but good entertainment some fairly nice sightseeing, nude and family beaches and lots more. your buck is on a par with ours< cost About $ 1800..00 Cattle class ten hour flight? Check it out at your T/A.
BTW. Bali is a NoNo too dangerous.
The Maldives??? they will all be submerged within ten years with GL/W.

We decided to go north to Reykjavik last September for our honeymoon. Not really beachy but the blue lagoon spa and hot springs was amazing and so relaxing. I don't know about February weather but like a four-day spa holiday in Iceland is a fab idea, not insanely expensive, and easy peasy from TO!

We'd love Australia but we'd have to be going for more than a week. It's a loooooooong flight over and it will take Sean more than 6 days to recover - he's 6'6 and there isn't really enough room on an airline for him to cram his legs between his seat and the one in front of him.

Gord and I went to the Mayan Riviera on our honeywoon .. it was nice.

My first husband and I went to Jamaica for ours ... I've been back since and I'm not a fan.

How about backpacking around Baffin Bay? Just kidding!

I'd say Costa Rica or Barbados or Hawaii (but Kauai or the Big Island - not Oahu).

Romantic Honeymoon idea? Me?

How about Costa Rica. They know that they country is beautiful and want to keep it that way.

Personally I would go to Australia so I find out once and for all which way the water spins when you flush the toilet.

I'd suggest a southern carribean cruise. We did royal carribean. We picked a less busy cruising schedule, was about 10 days door to door with our spending an extra day or two in Peurto Rico to see the planetarium thingy. Saw a few different islands than most people talk about.

We didnt have a honey moon since we had been together 10 years when we got married. We didnt have the money either.. So maybe some day but to get a good tan or burn Hawaii.. There you go.. Come to the states and to go Hawaii..

Did not know 'clement' was a word. Inclement yes, clement no. I feel so educated. If you want something sunny but calm go to Sanibel Island in Florida - the Lee Island Coast. Beauty to spare and they will cater to all your beverage needs. Plus it won't be so expensive.

Hi toot's, been a while I've seen you around or visited you but I just spotted a comment you left on my last camping blog so here I am visiting you.

Pretty sure I'll never do another honeymoon being as the available women here and I just drive each other nuts.

But if that were to happen it would just be camping somewhere in this area. After all, if she isn't a lover of camping and nature we'll never marry anyway.

And I have no need to go anywhere else on this rock anyway, don't have a passport and don't want one, I'm home where I am.

I was going to suggest Aus, but then read the bit about only having a week...that's not enough time. Fiji, Samoa, Tonga...any of those South Pac Islands are good.

Thanks for your comment on my blog, it's great to see you blogging again, you've always been one of my faves!

Oh wow Jay - I have missed you and your posts - I thought you were lost in the Bahamas and then I got lost in life...

Anyhow, seeing as you want to actually be able to recover and you have ruled out the large Southern continent where you will find Paradise, I have no idea how you are going to even enjoy your honeymoon.

All I know is you are going to probably have a great time. I think that is the most important ingredient...

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is lovely when the poppies are in bloom...

And if you are really lucky, the CIA will put a flamethrower to the entire crop.

Good times.

Nice to come by here and see you back and doing so well. Congratulations on your engagement (and those of your sisters)! May your multiple honeymoons be filled with as much wine as you can handle!

ST. MARTIN (the French side) Went there over the summer and the only bad part of the entire trip was getting on the plane to come home. Gorgeous beaches, sun and sand. It was the most beautiful place I have ever visited! Perfect for a shorter get away!

Aitutaki - Cook Islands; but only if you want to do nothing else but honeymoon.

Hey Jay! It's great to see you are OK! Honeymoon destination? I don't know, you ruled out my favorites. My wife would suggest Ireland if she were commenting here, but that doesn't seem that romantic for a honeymoon, and it gets cold.

Aruba. they don't rip you off on food prices. if you go you MUST eat at King's Ribs on Sat or Sun. they have casinos there too. always breezy

Tahiti and Moorea would be #1, but Jamaica and St. Thomas are also very beautiful, as is the South of France which has some really gorgeous beaches.

In europe switzerland is the destination but you need another place then south-east asia will be better option.

If you can afford a little heavy budget then maldives or male will be great place for honeymoon couple there you can get a private i-land of your choice!

Serious questions need to be asked regarding the recent boudoir activities and other goings on of Jay and lover boy.

My lovely friend and her lovely fella went to Belize. They loved it. The pictures made it look amazing and they said they did not do the locale justice.

However, says I, most of these places sound divine. And Europe this summer... :)

Lucky lady, you are. I wish you wine.

did someone say cuba yet? i loved cuba. did you rule it out? i have a really shitty attention span.

in a totally unrelated note, cuban rum is amazing.

It's all a crap shoot, but I've given up on women and just enjoy my camping and boating and the sweet and wise old lady next door.

My vote is for Costa Rica or the island of Maui in Hawaii.

I second the idea of a Caribbean cruise. The first cruise I took was on Princess line (highly recommend this!), and we visited Bermuda, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and Turks & Caicos.

So how's the honeymoon plans coming along?

BBC said...

Well hon, it all depends on the couple and how well they get along together, drinking or sober.

The last woman I lived with didn't drink even though I did, some anyway, not as much as I do now.

But she loved my dick and that worked for both of us for 12 years. Of course it helped that we are both pretty easy going people even though I rant a lot.

BBC said...

Oh, I have no need to get hitched up with any woman that wants to get away to exotic places. She would have to be fine with getting 20 miles into the wilderness in my 5th wheel with me.
